Our
house is in the quiet little village
of
Lesterps
in the heart of the Charente-Limousine
department, surrounded by beautiful oak woodlands, secluded river valleys,
sparkling lakes and green pastures. It is within 10 minutes drive of the
nearest large town of Confolens which has all
the usual amenities but the village itself also has a grocery, bakery,
butchers, bar and restaurant, post office, doctors’ surgery a museum and a
12th century church.
The
mediaeval town of
Confolens,
which stands on the magnificent River Vienne,
is 9 km. from the village. It has an abundance of interesting architecture
and is noted for hosting an annual dance and music festival during the
second week of August. At this event, which lasts for 10 days, dance
groups and musicians come from all over the world and the whole town is
completely transformed for their performances.
About 15 minutes away is the
swimming lake at Etagnac. Here the authorities have created an attractive
beach area where one can relax. Also on the site is a bar and restaurant
with toilets.
Further
a field but still within an hour’s drive are
Limoges,
Poitiers
and Angouleme
and the preserved destroyed town of
Oradour
sur
Glane (2nd World War). For a day visit
there are Cognac and the picturesque town of
Aubeterre sur
Dronne and, of course, the seaside around
Royan. These are just a few suggestions and
there are many more places of interest in and around the area.
Eating Out
This area is full of great
places to eat at very reasonable prices and you will enjoy discovering
them. We can recommend the following three from our regular visits to
them:- La Croix Blanche in Chabanais, Mere Michelet in Confolens and
L’Auberge de la Tour in St. Germain de Confolens.
